Realgood Foods

My husband and I have in the past couple months gone to a healthier lifestyle of carb cycling. While we do have many low carb meals, we aren't doing the keto diet. I could go into various reasons why I don't think keto is healthy, but i'll save that for another post. We have a reset day on the weekends in which we eat whatever we want in moderation of course. While the rest of the week is a mix of low carb and "high carb" days. High carb days really aren't high carb is just more than low carb days.

I recently became aware of the brand Realgood Foods that allow you to have the foods you want to enjoy, like pizza, but a low carb version. I was sent a couple free coupons so we took the time to try out a couple of the meals and so far, we like most of them. While we don't eat these nightly, we have had 3 of the meals and enjoyed them. The first one we tried was the Supreme Pizza on a chicken & mozzarella crust. I read numerous reviews about what they liked best and between the microwave and the oven, the majority liked the microwave best. I put it in for the minimum amount of time it called for and I had a cheesy mess. The cheese basically melted off of the pizza.

However, that didn't stop us from trying it. We did add extra turkey pepperoni and more cheese to it because the toppings are on the minimal side. I popped it back in the microwave for 30 more seconds and called it good. We shared this pizza because it said the serving size was 1/2, with another serving of some plain shredded chicken on the side to fulfill the extra protein we needed. After splitting the pizza in half, we went ahead and tried this cheesy mess. The crust is actually pretty tasty. I wasn't sure what to expect since there were mixed reviews online, but I give it a solid 8 out of 10. The toppings were tasty, even though we would have liked more. Hence, adding the extra turkey pepperoni and cheese to it.

There was a good bit of grease with it but I think that comes with microwaving it the way we did. As far as eating this again, we would definitely try the other chicken crust pizzas when we want to have an easy and convenient low carb dinner. While it wasn't the most attractive looking dinner, it did taste good. The sodium count is higher than usual for my liking, but I'm sure that comes with having chicken and cheese for crust. But since we drink a lot of water, I wasn't too worried about the sodium. If I didn't workout and ate these regularly, I would be worried about the sodium.

We use all natural, antibiotic free chicken breast and Parmesan to make our crust or tortilla shells instead of flour, corn, or rice. You’ll never find preservatives or weird sounding ingredients in our items. That’s how we make delicious REAL food with lots of protein and almost no carbs or sugar. Real Food you feel good about eating. Full list of ingredients can be found at www.realgoodfoods.com/productpage/

Next on the list to try was the Cauliflower Pizza Crust. In this case, we bought the Margherita pizza this time because it was actually the only one Kroger had at the time. This pizza we cooked in the oven since it's a larger pizza and being cauliflower, it was recommended for the oven. I wasn't sure how I was going to like this one because we had a horrible experience with cauliflower playing the part of ground beef in tacos that turned out horrific. It only took 15 minutes to cook in which after we did add a little bit of  cheese again just because we love cheese.

The flavor was actually pretty good and the crust tasted more like the way pizza crust tastes, without the carbs. It was soft and played the part of crust pretty well. It too needed more toppings. I would have loved to have more tomatoes on it. The pizza does taste pretty dang close to pizza and I would probably do as they suggest on the box by putting it on the stove with a little oil to give the bottom a more crispy crust. I didn't do that as I wanted to try it the way most people would but next time I will try it using the crispier crust method. Otherwise, it did pretty good to suffice as pizza. I was telling my husband if they did this one in a supreme pizza it would taste really good but I think the grease probably wouldn't allow for it to stay together. Or maybe they just haven't thought about making it a pizza. Who knows, but I'm opening to trying more of them on the cauliflower crust. Their description says its perfect for sharing and that it's family sized pizza. I wouldn't go as far to say family sized unless there are just 2-3 of you.

LOW CARB, HIGH PROTEIN: 19g protein and only 9g carbs per serving.
REAL, SIMPLE INGREDIENTS: Gluten-free crust made from cauliflower, egg and cheese. A truly low-carb, high protein pizza without added grains, gluten or fiber fillers.
LARGE FAMILY SIZED PIZZAS: 11”, 17oz pizzas, perfect for sharing.

The last product to write about on this blog is the Pepperoni & Cheese Chicken Poppers. I have to say I did have a lot higher expectations for this product. The picture on the box and the commercials make it look like they are going to be gooey, cheesy, pepperoni goodness. They kind of failed in that department because I felt as if I were eating just a hollow chicken nugget. It was a good tasting chicken nugget, but it was hollow. I didn't actually taste any pepperoni or cheese. The other thing I think would make this better would be if they put individual serving sized packages of marinara sauce in with the poppers. While they suggest to use a dipping sauce, I don't keep marinara in the fridge and didn't want to open a bottle from the cabinet just for a couple tablespoons. So including a small packet of pizza sauce would actually work pretty well! *Hint hint* I am still open to trying the other poppers because the jalepeno and cheddar as well as the artichoke and cheese sound good. That is, if there is cheese in the poppers. So on a scale of 1-10, I give the pepperonis a 5 just because they really don't have any pepperoni or cheese in it.

LOW CARB, HIGH PROTEIN: 22g protein and only 3g carbs per serving.
REAL, SIMPLE INGREDIENTS: Gluten-free poppers made from antibiotic-free chicken breast, stuffed with natural ingredients. No added grains, gluten or fiber fillers.
THE PERFECT SNACK: 9 poppers per box. Great for kids and quick snacking.

We still have a handful of coupons left for other products and have snack sized pizza and the enchiladas in the freezer still. We will try those in the near future and I will update this blog to include those. For now, this is the first of the reviews.
